We are pleased to invite you to an artist talk with artist Anita Karabašić, which will take place at Apoteka on May 23 at 6:00 PM. During the talk, she will present the artistic research and work developed during her residency at STUDIO DAS WEISSE HAUS in Vienna, organized by BLOCKFREI as part of the Responding to Trauma and Cultural Heritage Destruction.
Anita Karabašić is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores memory, cultural heritage, and the consequences of conflict. Her practice engages with public spaces, fosters participation, and employs community-based methodologies. During the talk, Anita Karabašić will present her broader artistic practice and reflect on her residency experience in Vienna, also talk about the installation Condemned, which was developed during the residency and exhibited on the facade of DAS WEISSE HAUS, in Vienna, at Hegelgasse 14. This installation brings together the material outcomes of two workshops conducted with pupils from BORG Hegelgasse 12, along with other participants. Through collectively crocheted textiles, the project fosters a co-creative environment that encourages conversations about the destruction of cultural heritage and the burdens of historical trauma, promoting dialogue on memory, war trauma, and collective authorship.
The methodology behind the work is rooted in the act of crocheting together, generating a shared rhythm and a low-pressure environment in which conversation can emerge naturally. Within this setting, sharing is never imposed; instead, emphasis is placed on listening, physical proximity, and the simple possibility of dialogue. Through this subtle approach, the project explores how artistic practices can hold space for difficult histories with care, avoiding reenactment or obligation while foregrounding the power of collective presence.
The event will be held in English and Croatian.
The artist talk forms part of the Creative Europe project Responding to Trauma and Cultural Heritage Destruction. Within the framework of the project, Apoteka collaborates with Documenta – Center for Dealing with the Past, BLOCKFREI (Austria), Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and STAN.
The project is co-financed by the European Union.
About the Artist:
