New approaches to antifascist and peace heritage in education and contemporary art practices

Partners: Apoteka – Space for Contemporary Art, Documenta – Center for Dealing with the Past, The Alliance of Anti-Fascists and Anti-Fascist Fighters of Primorsko-goranska County.

The project "New approaches to antifascist and peace heritage in education and contemporary art practices" was initiated with the aim of improving the quality of informing young people about anti-fascist resistance in the period 1941-1945 and peace initiatives in the 1990s, improving education for democratic and active citizenship and recognizing the rights of civilian victims of the Second World War II in Istria and Primorsko-Goranska County. The project seeks to involve young people and the general public in socio-cultural activities linked by a common theme: illuminating marginalized and forgotten historical events (e.g. the first victims of fascism in Istria; 26 frozen partisans in Matić poljana) and valorizing the unrecognized or insufficiently valued heritage of anti-fascism and peace initiatives (e.g. anti-fascist graffiti in Istria; Peace School in Mrkoplje).

The project connects the development of the educational program with memorial walks in Istria (Vodnjan) and Primorsko-Goranska County (Mrkopalj), which enable participants to actively and directly participate and learn about forgotten or marginalized events and facts about anti- fascism and peace initiatives. Furthermore, by organizing film screenings, art exhibitions and public lectures, the public will be introduced to new artistic approaches to anti-fascism and
peace, as well as new scientific research dedicated to anti-fascist heritage. In addition, through consultations with local institutions, a discussion will be initiated on the possibility of developing museum exhibits and educational-cultural routes related to anti-fascism and peace activism. Through the project, a public campaign will be carried out and a public event will be organized dedicated to advocating the recognition of the rights of civilian victims of the Second World War whose rights are not adequately regulated by law.

Documenta – Center for Dealing with the Past will share its many years of advocacy experience and experience in implementing various campaigns, commemorative walks and creating educational material. Apoteka – Space for Contemporary Art contributes to the project with its many years of activity in the cultural and artistic field through the organization of exhibitions, lectures and a film program, while the Alliance of Anti-Fascists and Anti-Fascist Fighters of
Primorsko-goranska County contributes with its experience in organizing the Peace Memorial and activities for young people and primary school students of the Primorsko-Goranska County.

Time frame of the project: 01.07.2022. – 30.09.2023.
Project value: € 29.178
